An emotionally troubled sixteen-year-old, Aza Holmes, goes on a detective search with her best friend, Daisy. They are after the $100,000 prize of finding information about billionaire Russell Pickett's disappearance. She becomes close with his son, Davis, and realizes that she isn't in it for the money any more. He explains to her that his father's inheritance is set to go to his tuatara--a primitive reptile species. She relates to his disappointment in his father.
Aza struggles with low self-esteem and an extreme, irrational fear of germs and bacteria. She grows to the point of regularly ingesting hand sanitizer to 'cleanse' her gut. As her severe symptoms of OCD worsen, Aza comes to the conclusion that Mr. Pickett is is dead in the sewer. Davis sends a out a search crew and finds him.
